ALUMINUM METAL ROOFING

THE PERFECT ROOFING MATERIAL FOR COASTAL INSTALLATIONS

Modern Metal Roofing has the unique ability to manufacture our premium metal roofing systems in both 24-gauge steel and .032 aluminum. As a roofing material, aluminum offers many benefits and properties that other metals, such as steel and copper cannot.

The primary benefit of aluminum metal roofing is its resistance to corrosion from saltwater in coastal areas. Salt residue in the air is highly corrosive to steel and other metals, which will cause a roofing system to rust and prematurely fail. However, aluminum is unique in that as it corrodes, it oxides and forms a hard film that actually strengthens and protects the metal. As a general rule, a coastal area is defined as being 1,500 feet or closer to a saltwater source.

Aluminum is the most abundant metallic element in the Earth’s crust, 8.23% by mass, making it the third most common of all the elements (after oxygen and silicon). While plentiful in nature, it easily bonds with other elements, meaning it is not found as a pure metal. Therefore, before it can be used it has to be separated, which frustrated scientists and chemists for decades after its discovery in the early 1800’s. Finally, in 1886 the modern method of obtaining aluminum was discovered and its use and popularity skyrocketed.

Once commercially available, aluminum became an integral building material, jumpstarting the aviation industry and space programs. Lightweight but incredibly durable, aluminum as a roofing material became common in the 1940’s, as manufacturing and coating technology evolved. Today, aluminum metal roofing has gained traction, primarily in coastal areas, due to its resistance to corrosion and durability. In addition, aluminum is highly recyclable, with estimates that over 70% of the aluminum ever produced is still in existence today!

MMR’s ALUMINUM ROOFING PANELS

Modern Metal Roofing offers our four distinct styles of metal roofing in both 24-gauge steel and .032 aluminum. This gives coastal homeowners, as defined by dwellings within 1,500 feet of seawater, unique roofing options previously unavailable! From the classic curves of our Metal Tile Series, to the distinct profile of our Metal Shake panels, or our traditional looking Metal Shingle, each style provides decades of beauty and durability.

POWDER COATED PROTECTION

Like our steel metal roofing panels, MMR offers a patented powder coating process that provides an additional layer of protection for our aluminum roofing. Unlike stone coated roofing products (you can read about the difference here), powder coating provides a permanently bonded finish that won’t flake off and discolor over time. In addition, the powder coating doesn’t affect the natural oxidization of the aluminum, ensuring long-lasting protection. Best of all, our aluminum roofing systems still carry a PVDF paint warranty when installed in coastal areas.

ENVIRONMENTALLY CONSCIOUS

Metal roofing solves a tremendous problem our environment is facing in the USA; the overabundance of asphalt shingles in our landfills. This results in billions of pounds of shingles being thrown away every year. Conversely, aluminum roofing is 100% recyclable, lasts much longer, and reflects more of the sun’s radiation, reducing cooling costs and energy usage!

While metal roofing systems vary greatly in quality, thickness, and materials used, most of them share some common benefits:

  • Long-term durability and service life,
  • High resistance to wind and hail damage,
  • Requires very little to no maintenance,
  • Increases the value of a home or business,
  • Environmentally-friendly and recyclable,
  • Reflects heat efficiently, resulting in energy savings,
  • Fireproof and animal damage resistant
